Morning Worship Sermon

OUR FAITH – HIS POWER – OUR NEED
Matthew 9:27-30

Matthew 9:27-30 And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us. 28 And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord. 29 Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. 30 And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it.”

There are three (3) great truths presented here :

1.  Our faith“Believe ye”
2.  His power“That I am able”
3.  Our need“To do this”

Folks it’s not God’s will that any perish :

II Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

It’s not His will that any one of His children be overcome by temptation :

I Corinthians 10:13 “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also  make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”

And if a believer does sin and stumble, it’s not His will that he remain down or in sin :

I John 1:1-2 -  My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”

He has the will and the power – and if we will only believe, all our needs are met :

II Corinthians 9:8 “God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:”

His will, Our faith, Our need supplied!

I.  OUR FAITH

The only thing standing between the sinner and salvation is faith to believe that Jesus is able to save – able to save even to the “UTTERMOST!” –  all who will come to God by Him :

Hebrews 7:25 “Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.”

All that stands between the Christian and victory over the world, flesh, and the devil - is faith to believe that He is able to give victory.

He is able – and when we believe that He is able, then complete victory and joy will be ours.

All that stands between the believer and the supplying of his every need is the faith to believe that God is able to do what He promised.  He promised to supply every need, if we would seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.

Matthew 6:33 -  But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

He has never broken any promise which He has spoken.  In fact, it is impossible for Him to break a promise :

Titus 2:1 “In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;”

Blindness is a type of sin; all sinners are blind :

II Corinthians 4:3-4 “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”

Until they are enlightened concerning this all-important fact, they cannot see their lost condition: they cannot realize their hopeless estate.

But when a sinner does realize his lost condition, then he will desire to know Jesus, whom to know is life eternal.

Unconverted people are in darkness and they love darkness :

John 3:19-20 “And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.”

The two blind men in our text had heard about Jesus – and to the spiritually blind Jesus said :

John 5:24 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”

Perhaps the blind men had heard about Jesus opening the eyes of blind Bartemaus or some other blind  men and God’s Word tells us that :

Romans 10:17 “…..faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

These men believed what they heard, and they decided to come to the place where Jesus was to be teaching that day.  Jesus’ invitation to all sinners is :

Matthew 11:28 “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

The men not only decided to go, they went!
Folks, there’s a big difference in deciding to go and going!

When they arrived they sought Jesus and made their request known to Him – and they were not timid or bashful in doing so – they cried out for His mercy :

Romans 10:13 “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Jesus answered the cry of the blind men by asking them if they believed

Believing, receiving, and faith cannot be separated.

If you believe with all your heart, you will trust
If you trust with all your heart, then this shows that you believe.
If you believe and trust, then you have faith.
Faith is the key that unlocks God’s storehouse of spiritual blessing.

John 3:18 “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

This verse makes it completely clear as to who is saved and why, and it tells us who is lost and why –Believers are saved, but unbelievers are lost.

These dear men had never seen Jesus – they were blind!

They did not ask their friends to check and be sure that it was Jesus to whom they were making their request; they did not ask Him to let them touch Him or His garment.  Neither did they ask Him to touch them.  (He touched them later, but they did not request it.)

They simply heard about Jesus, went to Jesus, and called upon Him for mercy.
He answered their request by asking them if they believed.

          Do you believe?
Do you believe Jesus is the Son of God!
Do you believe the Gospel which is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ?
          Do you believe?

          Our Faith, then :

II.  HIS POWER

What did Jesus want the two blind men to believe?
What does He want poor blind sinners to believe today?
Believe ye that I AM ABLE?”

In everyday language, Jesus said to the blind men – “Do you fellows really believe that I am able to open your blinded eyes and give you sight?  Do you believe that I am able to do what you are asking me to do for you?”
The miracle would never have been performed if they had not believed that HE WAS ABLE to open their eyes.  Their sight depended upon their ability TO BELIEVE IN HIS ABILITY!

Let’s look at some Bible facts concerning salvation :

The sinner must hear about Jesus.  And the only place the sinner can hear the truth about Jesus is the Word of God.

The sinner can never be saved until faith is exercised, and faith to save comes by hearing the Word of God.

Therefore, it is impossible for a soul to be saved until he hears the Word, believes the Word believes every word in the Word concerning Jesus, concerning His birth, His life, His death, His burial, and His resurrection.
Believing part of what the Word says about Jesus will never save you.
Believing that He was a good man or an extraordinary man will never save you.
Believing in His sinless life will never save you.
He was good, great, sinless, extraordinary, and everything else that you could say about Him – but believing all that would not keep you out of hell.

The sinner must believe that He is able – and the only way through which any poor soul will ever come to be saved is through the precious Word of God.

John 1:1,14 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 14  And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”

John 5:24 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”

Folks, it’s no wonder the devil hates the Word.
          Now listen to this :

John 1:11-13 “He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”

Jesus died, but through the vicarious sacrificing of His life, He conquered death.  He came to taste death for every man, and now because of His supreme sacrifice, we poor lost sinners can have life through Him.
He gives the power of birth – but only when we believe that HE IS ABLE and when we, upon the grounds of that belief, RECEIVE HIM as our personal Savior!

John 1:12-13 “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”

God does the regenerating when we believe that He is able.

DO YOU BELIEVE THAT HE HAS THE POWER to save your soul from hell?
DO YOU BELIEVE THAT HE HAS THE POWER to keep you from stumbling?
DO YOU BELIEVE THAT HE HAS THE POWER to keep you until the end?
DO YOU BELIEVE THAT HE HAS THE POWER to supply your every need?

If you do, then heaven with all its glories is at your disposal.

III.  OUR NEED

God wants us to believe Him for specific things.  He does not want us to come to Him and pray a general prayer which covers everything on earth which has to do with us.

He wants us to make our request specific.

Jesus asked the blind men :

Matthew 9:28 “And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.”

The “this” concerning these men – the specific thing for which they asked – was their sight.  They were blind, they had never seen the light of day – and they wanted their sight.

What is the “this” in your life?
          Have you been saved?
Have you been truly born again?
Are you sins covered with the precious blood of the Lord Jesus?
Is this the need of your life?

Is the “this” in your life the need of spiritual sight?  If so then follow the steps of the two blind men in our Scripture.

You have heard about Jesus; you have heard enough Gospel in this message to save you – if you will only believe what you have heard.

You have heard that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son to die on the Cross for sinners.  Do you believe it?

You have heard that Christ died for the ungodly and that He will save to the uttermost all who will come to God by Him.  Do you believe it?
The blind men had a need and you also have a need.

The blind men heard about the healing power of the Lord Jesus, and you have heard about His saving power.

The blind men made up their minds that they would go to Jesus, and they went.
Have you made up your mind that you are coming to Jesus for the supplying of your need?  If you have not done so, do it now!  Come to Him just as you are, and He will do the rest.

The only thing that stands between you and the new birth is simply coming to Jesus.

You MUST COME TO HIM, BELIEVING THAT HE IS ABLE – and leave the rest to Him.

It’s His power which regenerates you into God’s family.
It is faith in His ability to do so which you must furnish – and your faith in Him is all that you can furnish!

When you believe, then He saves!

Are you already saved, but living a defeated life?

Then the “this” in your life is victory over the world, flesh, and the devil.
If you believe that God is able, then He will do “this” for you.

There is no excuse for any believer living a defeated life.  God has the power to give us victory – and He is the only One who can do this.

John 10:10 “….I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

On the mount of temptation, the devil hurled everything hell had to offer at Jesus, but He conquered every one of these temptations.

The three avenues of temptation through which the devil works are found in :

I John 2:16 “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”

Faith is the victory that overcomes the world.  It is not by might, nor by power, nor by holding on, nor by holding out, nor by doing our best that we become conquerors – no, it’s by exercising simple faith in the finished work of the Lord Jesus.

“Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.”

Jesus asked the blind men if they believed that He was able to do what they were asking.

They said unto Him, “Yea, Lord.”
But merely saying that we believe everything that is in the Bible, and actually believing it and taking positive action upon you faith, are two entirely different things.

We can say that we believe, and believe not.

So, Jesus touched their eyes and said unto them :  “According to YOUR FAITH be IT unto YOU!”

          They did believe!
          They did have faith!

They believed that He was able – that He was able to do THISto open their eyes.
The split second they exercised their faith in His ability, that second their eyes were opened.

“According to your faith, be it unto you.”

It happened!  Their eyes opened in response to their faith in His ability.

Do you believe that He is able?
Then the “IT” of all your needs can be – and will be – supplied.

Is it salvation that you need?
Is it victory over sin that you need?
Is it grace to love your enemies that you need?
Is it victory over the lusts of the flesh that you need?
Is it victory over prayerlessness that you need?
Is it victory over failing to read your Bible that you need?
Is it victory over some filthy habit that you need?

          What is your need?
Whatever your need, He is able to supply it – and if you will believe this, then He will do it.

“Believe ye – that I – AM ABLE?”

According to His will, and according to your faith, all your needs will be met!
          He is able!
Believe this, and rejoice in the abundance of His grace.

          ARE YOU SAVED?
          IF NOT, WHY NOT?
